Week 4: Raising the stakes

Welcome to week four!

A great novel has two parts:

1. story - what happens

2. drama - why it matters.

Many authors lose readers with boring backstory and information, which takes away all the intrigue and suspense; or by not including enough conflict (which is different than violence or action).

A lot of this will make more sense after the first draft is done; and we can improve conflict and motivation, or add more, during edits - but it's best to think ahead and at least add some in.

After watching this video, you can go through your plot outline and try to add in more conflict to keep things moving. I've also included a scene checklist and some info on plot twists and reveals.
